Risk Factors for Gum Disease

Posted .

Most adults think it’s normal for gums to bleed a little while they brush their teeth. This is not true! In fact, bleeding gums can be an indicator of gum disease. Advanced gum disease affects over 40 percent of adults in the United States. Some people are more at risk of getting gum disease than other people. Here are a few things that put you at greater risk of gum disease:

Stress: High levels of stress over long periods of time can reduce the efficacy of your immune system. This reduces your ability to fight off infection, including gum disease. Stress can also lead to clenching and grinding teeth while sleeping (a condition known as bruxism). Bruxism and TMJ disorders put people at higher risk of gum disease.

Poor Diet: Severe lack of Vitamin C in your diet can lead to bleeding gums, a condition known as “scurvy.” Eating a balanced diet loaded with vitamins, minerals and macronutrients such as protein can help protect your body from many diseases, including gum disease.

Smoking and Tobacco Use: Smoking and tobacco use are terrible for your overall health, and is the leading cause of gum disease among adults in the United States. How often and how long you have smoked are directly and positively correlated with your risk of gum disease.
